July is going to be a landmark month for combat sports. Fans are going to be treated to five UFC events including one of the greatest cards of all time; UFC 226. The month will also feature some great events from some of the sports other major organisations including two events from PFL, Bellator, and ACB and a single event from Rizin and Glory. July is going to be glorious for fight fans and will surely feature some of the greatest fights and finishes of the year. Here is a list of the five most anticipated fights of the month.
Five – Paul Felder Vs James Vick
Paul Felder and James Vick — simultaneously two of the best and most underrated Lightweights in the world — will face on the main card of UFC Boise. With all the incredible fights taking place in July, this fight has severely fallen under the radar for many fans. The winner of this fight will not only prove themselves as the best fighter outside of the top 10 but they will have the chance to move up in the log-jammed contender’s queue at Lightweight. Apart from the divisional consequences, this fight is just superb matchmaking. James Vick is a long, accurate fighter (the tallest in the division) who does his best work at distance. Whereas Paul Felder is a compact and powerful fighter — suffering from a major height and reach disadvantage — who does his best work in close range. This fight is going to be a fascinating battle between two of the best Lightweights in the world and will truly be one of the best fights of the month.
Four – Israel Adesanya Vs Brad Tavares
In the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 27 Finale, sensational striker Israel Adesanya will face off with one of the Middleweight divisions longest tenured fighters Brad Tavares. This fight, apart from being a phenomenal stylistic matchup, holds some major divisional consequences. After successfully defeating Yoel Romero for the second time, Robert Whittaker is left with only one viable contender in Kelvin Gastelum. If Whittaker is able to successfully defend his belt against Gastelum, he will likely be left without a viable or worthwhile contender to face. If either Israel Adesanya or Brad Tavares is able to earn an impressive victory in this fight, they could vault themselves up in the rankings and potentially into a number one contender’s fight. This is going to be an amazing matchup between two of the best Middleweights in the world and will surely deliver one of the most entertaining fights of the month.
Three – Eddie Alvarez Vs Dustin Poirier 2
In the main event of UFC on Fox 30, Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez will face off in a rematch of their extremely entertaining and controversial fight from UFC 211 in 2017. This is without a doubt one of the most anticipated fights of the year let alone the month of July. As we saw in their first bout, and throughout their careers generally, Eddie Alvarez and Dustin Poirier are not average fighters. Both of these men are outliers among outliers in the toughest sport on earth. The heart, skill, and determination possessed by both of these Lightweights guarantees that every single time we see them fight it is going to be an unforgettable experience. Although a rematch between the two was inevitable, we should be extremely thankful that this fight is a five-round main event on a free card.
Two – Stipe Miocic Vs Daniel Cormier
The UFC 226 main event between Heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and Light-Heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is without a doubt one of the best Heavyweight fights to ever take place in the UFC. Matchups of this magnitude are very rarely put together but when they are they have the ability to elevate the sport as a whole and be remembered for years to come. This fight holds major consequences for both men outside of just winning and losing. If he is able to successfully defend his belt, Stipe Miocic will without a doubt cement himself as the greatest Heavyweight of all time. Daniel Cormier one the other hand will be fighting for the chance to solidify his legacy and become the fifth two-weight world champion in UFC history and the first to hold both the Heavyweight and Light-Heavyweight belts. This fight is as grand as a UFC title fight can be and will surely produce a historic moment for one of these men. It would be foolish not to be excited for this fight.
One – Max Holloway Vs Brian Ortega
The UFC 226 Co-Main event between Max Holloway and Brian Ortega is special. This fight is what happens when a division is in perfect order. Everything has perfectly fallen into place to make this fight happen between the consensus, two best Featherweights in the world. Although Max Holloway is the reigning champion and one of the best fighters of all time, Brian Ortega has a very legitimate chance of dethroning him in this fight. The matchup will play into the strengths and weaknesses of both men and will surely bring out their absolute best. It is impossible to pick a winner in this fight and it is not unreasonable to believe we will be seeing these two fight more than once, regardless of the winner. This fight is going to be absolutely sensational and is undeniably the best fight taking place in the month of July.
