Fedor Emelianenko Vs Frank Mir

Bellator 198 (April 28, 2018)

Fedor Emelianenko Vs Frank Mir

Winner – Fedor Emelianenko Via Round 1 KO

One of the most legendary figures in the art of combat, Fedor Emelianenko returned to the cage today in the main event of Bellator 198. Putting a cap on an overall entertaining card, Fedor took on fellow Heavyweight legend Frank Mir in a bout to determine who will advance to the second round of the Heavyweight Grand Prix.

It may have lasted less than a minute but this fight was the most exciting, and impactful, of the Heavyweight tournament so far. As Bellator continues to struggle for ratings and success in general, the future of the company could very well balance on the shoulders of the Heavyweight tournament. With that in mind, today was a big win for the company. Keeping Fedor in the tournament for as long possible is well and truly in Bellator’s best interest. Not only did Fedor advance to the next round of the Grand Prix today, he did so in emphatic fashion.

Fedor will now face Chael Sonnen in the second round of the tournament later this year, with the winner advancing to the final (optimistically) slated for the end of this year. Out of the seven other competitors in the Grand Prix, Sonnen is realistically the most favourable matchup for Fedor — making it very likely that he will advance to the final. As excellent as it would be to see Fedor compete in the final, his chances of defeating either Matt Mitrione or Ryan Bader are unfortunately slim. That being said, it was amazing to see Fedor get an impressive win and satisfying knowing we will get to see him advance to the next round of the Grand Prix. I am finally starting to get excited about this tournament and can not wait to see the next round.
