UFC 204 (October 8 2016)
Albert Tumenov Vs Leon Edwards
Winner – Leon Edwards Via Round 3 Submission
On paper, this weekend’s UFC London card is, unfortunately, the weakest of the year so far. That is not to say that the card will feature lacklustre fights. If you take the time to look into some of the fights on this card, there are plenty of gems to be found. One of the fights that is going to be the most intriguing on this card will be Leon Edwards Vs Peter Sobotta.
Leon Edwards is quietly asserting himself as one of the best-unranked Welterweights in the world. He is currently on a four-fight win streak that includes impressive wins over Albert Tumenov and Vicente Luque. Although the matchup with Sobotta feels like more of a sidestep than a leap forward, Edwards is on the cusp of the top 15. With an impressive performance this weekend it is going to be hard to deny him a shot at a ranked opponent.
Edwards is the type of fighter that you can watch for fifteen minutes straight and not know what he is good at. This is not due to his lack of skill but to his extremely well-rounded game. Leon’s lack of an outstanding attribute may be seen as a weakness by some, but the reality is that this is exactly what makes him so successful.
Today’s fight is Edwards’ win over Albert Tumenov. This was by far the most impressive win of his career and is a perfect example of how effective his well-rounded game can be. Facing one of the most dangerous strikers in the division and arguably one of the best Welterweights in the world – Edwards was able to pull out a gutsy win in the third by capitalizing on the fact that his game was more well rounded than the striking based Tumenov.
Leon Edwards is one of the most promising talents fighting out of England at the moment and will likely be one of the biggest standouts from this weekends card. I am very excited to see him compete again and can not wait to see what the future holds for Leon Edwards.
