With so many great finishes every weekend in combat sports its hard to keep track of them all. As a way to help myself keep track of and chronicle as many as possible, I am going to do a wrap up and best of for every month. There is no criteria as to what makes the list, it is only based on what I liked best.
January was a great month full of some incredible finishes. The month was light when it came to standout submissions but dense with incredible knockouts. From Bellator 192 alone we saw Aaron Pico and Joey Davis pull of incredible body-shot knockouts that are going to be hard to beat. There were plenty to choose from in January so if I missed any that you think deserve to be placed in the list comment them below.
Five – Calvin Kattar’s Smooth Uppercuts Vs Shane Burgos
This wasn’t the most powerful or most flashy finish, but damn was it nice. After two tough back and forth rounds, Kattar came out for the third round looking to make a statement and that’s exactly what he did – finishing Burgos with a beautiful string of uppercuts and hooks in front of his home crowd.
Four – We’re Throwin’ Spinning Shit Now? with Joey Davis
I could not be a bigger proponent for body-shots in MMA. It takes just one well placed shot to make even the toughest opponent curl into a ball on the canvas. That is exactly what Joey Davis did to poor Ian Butler at Bellator 192.
Three – Edward Kelly Makes Meas Meu Face Plant in under 30 seconds
I didn’t get a chance to see this knockout until a few days after it happened, so I already knew the result. I can imagine it would have been fantastic to watch live. The fight was like something out of a crappy B movie, It lasted all of 21 seconds and was over with the first combination Kelly threw. It was like he was hitting the pads, every shot he threw landed and Meu brutally face planted to the mat. Crazy.
Two – Abdul Razak Alhassan Terrifying Uppercut Vs Sabah Homasi
This knockout may be number two on my list of favourites but it is the number one most vicious. Alhassan and Homasi were facing off in a heated rematch of their controversial first fight. The animosity between the two made for an exciting fight and an electrifying finish. Alhassan landed an uppercut that is as picture perfect as they get – instantly flatlining Homasi.
One – Aaron Pico’s Crushing Left Hook to the Body of Shane Kruchten
Bellator super prospect Aaron Pico scored his second career win in January. Finishing the fight with another explosive left hook knockout in the first round. Only this time it was too the body. The KO punch was devastating, instantly crumbling his tough opponent. This finish is definitely my favourite of the month and is going to be hard to beat this year.
